I despair! When I received the details of this house the price was quoted at 38,000,000 pesetas which is about 204,000 Euros. It's not uncommon for country people to still use pesetas when discussing big items but that was clearly a ridiculous price for a little house on 2,000 m2 of land in the campo, even if it does have an attractive pool. As all our other new listings came at sensible prices I assumed that in this case there had been a mistake and they meant 38,000 Euros. I was wrong. The question is; what planet are these sellers on? Quite clearly the news of the recession hasn't made it through in some quarters! And then I thought again about some recent conversations with colleagues which threw a different light on things. This seller just might not be from another planet or totally out of touch with reality. Maybe he has seen something the rest of us haven't. The fact is that across a number of areas of Andalucia prices are holding firm as Spanish buyers snap up the bargains. Why? Because in times of economic uncertainty, when there is talk of inflation, when economists talk about the future of the Euro, there is a constant. Real estate. Own a house or land and you have an asset. No matter what else happens or how much governments screw up you still own the property, it will always have a value because it always has a use. Finally a thought. I remember talking to a neighbour, a builder, when I first arrived in Spain. He had grown up in hard times when hunger and poverty stalked the land. He owned a beautifully maintained plot near my house and he said 'when you have land you never starve'. So maybe, just maybe, this seller isn't as mad as he looks! Mind you I wouldn't buy this house at this price and neither should you, no matter how interesting the owners thinking is!
